Ebenezer Grumpypants is a Bogle from Briarwood, which is a Faery Hollow in the Duchy of Bluegrass, Kingdom of Rolling Hills. Among his hobbies is cooking. Toad in a Hole is one of his favorite recipes. Feel free to try it out – but be sure to use the right amphibian otherwise you’ll get frog in your throat!
Dryad Birch Sap Chewsticks Silver Birch have a unique quality about them in that they produce a type of liquid sap that is flavorful for consumption. The roots of the Silver Birch absorb the water from underground, drawing up into the tree trunk. One can obtain the Birch Sap by drilling a hole in the base of the tree, which will allow the sap to pour out. It must be tightly corked up when done or the tree may suffer infectious fungus.
Be careful however, for the Silver Birch may be home to a Dryad. These are a type of Faerie that inhabit the living trees. Indeed, it may have been a Dryad that embraced Rip Van Winkle in her roots, wrapping him in Faerie for 100 years!
They are thought to be guardians of the forest and woodlands, for this reason, it is unwise to harm a tree without first asking the permission of its inhabitant and caretaker.
It is said that one distiller discerned the approval of a “tree spirit” or Dryad, when snapped a small branch from the tree, and her sap poured forth. Putting the twig in his mouth to chew on as he worked, he noted the delicious taste, and began soaking the twigs in Birch Sap, thus creating flavored chewsticks, predecessor to the modern toothpick!
